Cats are incredible animals that are interesting as they are clever. These intelligent animals are often a common feature in a home and once you own a cat, you will hardly imagine not having one in your life. However, many people restrain from having a cat because they believe keeping up with the grooming is extremely difficult – and it is.

Cats tend to shed hair all over the place and it can be quite hard to keep up with that and vacuum all the time.

If you are eager to have a cat but you are concerned about this issue, it is quite understandable, especially if you are allergic to cats. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid such problems. There are various types of cat breeds and many of them don’t shed as much hair, or at all, so this may be a good solution for you.

If you are allergic to dander, get a cat that doesn’t have a double coat or a low shedding cat. Unfortunately, if you are allergic to protein, which is found in a cat’s saliva, then the problem is way more serious.

Sphynx

Sphynxes are one of the popular short-hair breeds. It appears to be hairless but actually, it is covered with fine, very short hair which can hardly be felt. Because this cat breed has no coat, it doesn’t shed all over the place, so it is perfect for your home. In fact, Sphynxes are the result of an effort to create a hairless cat breed.

The skin of a Sphynx cat tends to be oily as the cat doesn’t have enough hair to absorb the oils, so it requires regular bathing to maintain their skin clean. As they lack natural protection or coat, their sensitive skin should be protected from the sun.

Cornish Rex

Cornish Rex is a very interesting cat breed that features large ears and a small head. They have very short hair and shed much less than other cats, so you don’t have to worry about it. Only the down layer of their coat can grow, meaning that they don’t have the two outer layers of the coat.

Because they lack the outer layers of the coat, they tend to be cold, so you need to take necessary steps to maintain their body temperature. The Cornish Rex are very active and affectionate and love being around people.

Bengal

The Bengal cat is very pretty with green eyes and an interesting coat that resembles their larger cousins such as the leopard. This is a hybrid breed which is partly domestic cat and partly wild Asian cat, which has very short fur. This means that they shed very little and require very little grooming, as well. If you are searching for a cat that requires little maintenance, then the Bengal is the right choice; they are very vocal and like spending time with people.

Russian Blue

Russian Blue cats have a very thick gray coat but surprisingly, they shed very little. They usually shed just once or twice a year and this period may last for a few weeks – but that’s it, making them perfect for your home. They are very beautiful with a gentle temperament and they can be easily trained, as well. They are a very quiet and devoted breed of cats that really enjoy human company.

Peterbald

The Peterbald features large ears and it is actually developed from Russian Donskoy. These cats can be born with or without hair, but those born with hair usually lose it as they age. So you won’t have to worry about shedding. The Peterbald can vary in color and have very small heads. In addition, they enjoy human company and you will find them to be very affectionate.

Donskoy

The Donskoy is a Russian breed that resembles the Sphynx. It has very short hair as only the down layer of their coat actually grows, so they also appear hairless. They don’t shed, which makes them a great companion for those with allergies. Unlike other cats with short hair, they tend to be very warm and they sweat to shed excess heat.

Devon Rex

The Devon Rex has a similar fur as the Cornish Rex, but the two breeds are not related. These cats only have the down layer of their fur; therefore, they don’t shed very much. They are easily trained and they enjoy being around their owners.

Oriental

The Oriental cat is actually a variant of the Siamese and similarly, it has a short fur that rarely sheds. Just like with the Siamese, you need to brush them occasionally to get rid of the old fur, but they won’t shed all over the house. They are very social and enjoy being around people, which makes them a great pet.

Siamese

The Siamese is a very beautiful breed that originated in Thailand but became widely popular across the world. However, their unique appearance is not the only reason why you should consider getting a Siamese cat.

As they have a coat that traps all the shed fur, they don’t shed all over the place. You only need to brush them from time to time to remove the old fur which is trapped in the coat. The Siamese is a very friendly breed and they enjoy being around people as well as other cats.

Conclusion
You are dreaming of owning a cat, but you are in doubt whether you are capable of keeping up with the grooming. Maybe you’re considering the ragdoll mix. Or wondering how you will keep your allergies at bay, consider getting one of these non shedding breeds. They are equally affectionate and beautiful, but they solve the greatest problem – which is shedding.
